Madhvani science scholarships ready

18th May 2009; Weekly Observer by Diana Nabiruma

In the midst of tuition increments from universities in the country, there is a glimmer of hope for students in the Madhvani Foundation.

Since 2003, the Foundation has been sponsoring students pursuing science-based courses. The year 2009/2010 will be no different as Henry Kyemba, chairman of the Scholarship Committee, announced on Wednesday, May 6, at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

The Foundation has put aside half a billion shillings for students pursuing university education in Uganda. This is by far the largest sum to be put aside for this project because the foundation seeks to fill the gap left in funding by the government.

Since its inception in 2003, the trust has educated over 540 students and the added advantage of this scheme is that you stand a chance of getting a job in the Madhvani Group on completion of your studies.

Susan Akello, one of the first beneficiaries of this project, is now a medical doctor.

Only continuing students, those in year two and above, can apply for the scholarships.

Applications can be picked up from The Muljibhai Madhvani Building at plot 20/2 Jinja Road, or they can be downloaded from www.madhvanifoundation.com.

The Foundation calls for students from genuinely disadvantaged backgrounds to apply. Students that fraudulently acquire the scholarships will be disqualified on discovery.
