175 get Madhvani scholarships
31st August 2009; The Observer by Our Reporter
The Madhvani Foundation has awarded 175 students with scholarships in the fields of Business Administration, Information Technology, Agriculture, Engineering, Land Surveying and Law, among others.
“Of the 175 scholarships awarded, 160 went to undergraduate students while 15 went to post graduate candidates,” said Sam Rutega, chairman of the Madhvani Foundation, in a press release.
The scholarships worth Shs516m were announced after a highly competitive selection process that was recently held at Makerere University.
According to Henry Kyemba, chairman of the Scholarships Selection Committee, the bursaries were distributed evenly across the country’s regions: Central (43), East (41), North (39) and the West had 52. This is a big leap from a few years back when almost 80% of the recipients came from the Central and Eastern parts of Uganda.
Since 2003, when the University Education Trust was set up to promote scientific and technical education, the Madhvani Foundation has sponsored over 540 university students in scholarships worth over Shs2.5bn.
